Xanten
Siegfried was born in Xanten according to the Nibelungenlied.
From Ascension Day to the following Sunday every year, the medieval Siegfried Festival takes place along the town walls near the Kriemhild Windmill. In autumn 2009 a new museum called Nibelungen(h)ort will be openened in the town centre.
But there's more to Xanten than the Nibelungen. The Archaeological Park and the Roman Museum bear witness to Xanten's Roman past. Numerous historic buildings and the mighty St. Victor's Cathedral show how wealthy and important Xanten was in medieval times.
A more modern attraction is the leisure centre that offers a broad variety of water sports at Xanten's North and South lakes. The countryside around Xanten is ideal for walking or cycling. The annual summer festival is well known, even beyond Germany's borders.
Xanten, situated in Northrhine-Westphalia, is the touristic flagship of the Wesel district. The small town on the the left bank of the Rhine has about 23,000 inhabitants.
