The ransom for his release brought an enormous economic boom to the town. Habsburg rule of Austria began in 1278 when Rudolf I conquered Ottokar II of Böhmen. Vienna is the capital of Austria and one of its nine states. It is the largest city in Austria with around 1,670,000 inhabitants. Around 2 million people live in the greater Vienna area - a quarter of all Austrians. Vienna is the 10th largest city in the EU in terms of population.
