Großmehring

Großmehring is a community in the administrative district of Eichstätt in the Upper Bavaria region. It has around 6,500 inhabitants.

Großmehring was first mentioned in writing in 1007 but probably already existed from around 550. Archaeological finds lead to the conclusion that the Großmehring area was populated in the Neolithic period, about 4000 years ago. Celts, Romans and Germanic tribes followed.

Großmehring is mentioned in Chapter XXI of the Nibelungenlied. The Burgundians crossed the Danube at "Moeringen". Here, Hagen of Tronje threw the priest into the Danube so that the prophecy that only the priest would survive the journey to Etzel's court would not be fulfilled. But the priest was able to save himself.

Near the Danube bridge stands the Nibelungen Memorial and at the Town Hall, a Nibelungen fountain has been built. The parish church, dating from the 13th centuy, is also worth seeing.
